She Drives: VERITY Now July 2023 Update
At VERITY Now, we’re working to improve women’s safety in vehicles by advocating for updated crash testing standards. She Drives is a monthly email newsletter with updates on the latest news, research, upcoming events and ways to get involved with VERITY Now. We’re glad you’re here, now let’s get into it.
In this section, we’ll cover all the things we’ve been working on or paying attention to over the last month and what is coming up next.
VERITY Now thanks the House and Senate Appropriations Committees for including language on equality in crash testing
This month, congressional allies offered critical leadership on the issue of crash test equality in both the House and Senate Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations Reports. The reports highlight the growing consensus on the issue of crash testing equality, calling for the adoption of female crash test dummies and urging that NHTSA require the same frontal crash tests for female drivers that they do for men.
We are excited to see incredible progress being made towards equality among regulators, legislators and industry. The quicker we deploy updated and expanded tests and advanced crash testing equipment, the more lives can be saved.
At VERITY Now, we are continuing to work to bring about these much-needed changes as quickly as possible. For more details, you can review VERITY Now’s statement in response to House Appropriations, as well as the statement to the Senate.
There’s a lot to cover when it comes to vehicle safety, especially when it comes to women’s health and wellbeing. In this section, we’ll cover the top things you need to know when it comes to protecting women behind the wheel.
⚠️Gender Differences in Crash Testing⚠️
#DYK that current crash testing standards test differently for men than for women? For example, the current dummy being used to represent females is essentially a shrunken-down, smaller version of a male crash test dummy, which does not accurately represent women. Even worse, they do not conduct frontal crash tests with women in the driver’s seat.
👀See the difference...between the biofidelic representation of the female body in crash testing versus what is currently being used.
