SXSW 2021 Panel: Why Car Safety Regulations Are Killing Women
This year at SXSW, VERITY NOW convened a panel of industry-leading experts to discuss the inherent inequities in vehicle safety between women and men. The session explores how outdated safety regulations, tools, and standards have led to higher risk of injury and death for women and offers concrete solutions for how we can reduce risk and better protect all vehicle occupants.
For many years US government data has shown that women are 73% more at risk of injury and 17% more at risk of dying in a vehicle accident than men. Current auto safety regulations only require the use of a male crash test dummy in the driver’s seat which results in thousands more women getting injured and hundreds more losing their lives.
The panel features industry-leading experts, including:
Moderator: Jon Decker, White House Correspondent for Gray TV
Panelist: Caroline Criado Perez, author of Invisible Women
Panelist: Susan Molinari, Former Member of Congress
Panelist: Chris O'Connor, CEO of Humanetics Group
